SRVU Studentenbond
Student union of the VU since 1947

Nobody stands up for VU students alone.

We fight for good education, affordable housing and student wellbeing, and we help you personally when something goes wrong with your studies. Free, independent, run by students.

Three pillars, one union

The SRVU rests on advocacy, service and development. Everything we do sits on one of these three.

1

Advocacy

Council members in the University Student Council, a national voice through the LSVb, and campaigns when talking is not enough.

What we're fighting for →
2

Service

Free legal advice, our student desk, the exchange market and the menstrual cabinet. Practical help, no appointment needed.

3

Development

A better university, and better facilities, plus a year on our board or a committee that teaches you more than any minor.

Something wrong with your studies?

A negative BSA, a dispute with the Examination Board, DUO trouble or a landlord who won't listen. Our legal aid team helps VU students for free.

What we do

The SRVU pillars

Advocacy, service and development. It sounds like policy language. In practice it means someone is in the room when decisions about your degree get made.

Advocacy

USR · LSVb · Campaigns

Advocacy happens through our council members in the University Student Council (USR), the highest student participation body at the VU. Nationally we work through the Dutch National Student Union (LSVb).

And when the formal route stalls, we campaign: petitions, actions and press, together with students and staff.

Service

Legal aid · Student desk · Room office

Free legal advice on education, tenancy and employment law. A student desk for every question that doesn't fit anywhere else. An exchange market and a menstrual cabinet in the Studentendok.

Development

Facilities · Board year · Committees

We push the university towards optimal facilities, and we give students room to grow: a board year, a committee seat, or a first campaign of your own.

What we can help with

{{ t }}

Good to know

It's free. For every student at the VU, member or not.

Give us up to two weeks. Our team are students too, so they'll get back to you within two weeks, usually sooner.

Write it all down. Explain the problem, add dates and any letters or emails you've already had. It saves a round trip.

Deadline soon? Say so in the subject line. Appeal windows are short and we'll prioritise.

News

What we're up to

Wins, setbacks and the occasional protest. Updates from the council, the campaigns and the Studentendok.

Send an email to socosrvu@gmail.com with three things: a letter explaining why you're applying and what makes you a good fit, your CV, and optionally the position you'd prefer (general board member, chair, vice-chair, secretary or treasurer).

Not sure yet? Slide into our Instagram DMs or drop by the Studentendok. We'd rather talk it through than have you not apply.

Or join a committee

About us

Student union of the VU since 1947

The SRVU has represented students at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 1947. As the representative of VU students we're there for everyone, member or not, to stand up for their interests.

Alongside that we provide services, push the university forward and give students room to develop themselves. The SRVU stands for more than just studying.
